Welcome to B'nai Israel Living History Synagogue in Council Bluffs, Iowa! Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and continuously active since 1904, this historic shul is one of the region's oldest. In addition to hosting monthly services, arts events, and group activities, we preserve the legacy of Jewish life in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa.
Our Living History Museum features in-depth, interactive exhibits and thoughtful learning and reflection centers


Feb 13, 2026, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PMA deeply meaningful and informative Shabbat Service and Oneg featuring Captain Jessica Wagner who will speak to us about the correlations between WWII and now in terms of protecting cultural identity and property during a large-scale, armed conflict.
Mar 28, 2026, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PMThe Council Bluffs Historic Preservation Commission features B’nai Israel and other local museums and organizations doing the work of preserving our past.
